January 2016 Update
Hi there. Everything you see below this update is true but out of date. I'll leave it so that you can see my history but know that I am in a different place right now, literally. I now work almost full time at Campbell Elementary School as an Outdoor Classroom and Curriculum Support (person) but officially my title is Luckiest Person In The World. I also provide after school enrichment (nature, herbs, cooking, gardening, science) and I'm seriously contemplating teacher certification. Shh-don't tell anyone.
Moving forward this website will mostly be a place to put information about my Summer camps since I'll now be going on my third Summer of taking children's learning to a new and exciting level through (wait for it) play and exploration. Please continue to follow me on Twitter right here to see what kind of trouble I get into on a regular basis.
Right here, this is why I do what I do.
Yes, I have been in the food industry for 25 years and I know what I'm talking about when it comes to food. But it was somewhere at the intersection of parenthood and culinary success that things got real. When my husband and I became responsible for these little (well, not so little now) beings and their health we knew that food would be the single most important tool we had.
I consider it a blessing, a privilege, and a responsibility to feed my children well. We accomplish that through the meals we serve them, literature, gardening, shopping at farmer's markets, visiting farms, teaching them to cook, and through fellowship with others. It is never just one of these things. And just so you know, we are by no means perfect. We eat Halloween candy, Easter treats, and birthday cake. Sometimes we have ice cream sundaes for dinner and hot dogs for dessert.
Did I just admit to all of that?
I have been the executive chef at one of DC's best restaurants, started three of my own businesses(including a restaurant), and assisted in opening three others. Ten years ago I started teaching people about eating healthy local foods and how to cook them. Going from the glamorous restaurant scene to people's humble homes was an amazing and significant step. I began to feel much more connected to people and I learned as much from them as they did from me. Now I teach two groups of people: parents and children. I teach parents how to feed their children, from 6 months to 18 years. I teach children life-changing words like "local" and "in season" and how to chop, prep, and cook the most amazing foods.
As you can see my audience has changed dramatically over the years. These days my teaching is just as much about passing on my knowledge as it is about learning a person's or a family's story. I love the work I do and I'd love to help give you the confidence to feed your family well, too.
Aside from my own company, I also work for these amazing people:
The Breastfeeding Center for Greater WashingtonFoodPrints with FRESHFARM Markets at Peabody Early Childhood Center
